Elite Disagreement and Socio-Economic Development in Benue State

Abstract

Benue State experiences persistent elite disagreements, often arising from conflicts

over resource allocation, governance, and policy priorities. These disputes hinder socio-economic development, affecting infrastructure, employment, education, and

healthcare. This study examined the effects of elite disagreement using a descriptive design,

combining questionnaires, key informant interviews, and secondary data. A total of 400

respondents, including political elites, government officials, community leaders, and

residents, provided insights on the impacts of political disputes. Findings reveal that

disagreements delay road and public facility projects, stall employment and youth programs,

disrupt school construction and teacher recruitment, and hinder healthcare delivery. These

challenges reduce trade, job opportunities, educational access, and health outcomes,

particularly in rural areas. The study recommends promoting political cohesion, transparent

planning, equitable resource allocation, and strong institutional oversight to mitigate the

adverse effects of elite conflicts. Addressing these issues is essential for inclusive and

sustainable socio-economic growth in Benue State.
