Department of Development Communication Studies

BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of Development Communication Studies was one of the six newly established Departments of the newly established Faculty of Communication and Media by the Prof. Tor Joe Iorapuu administration as the 6th Vice Chancellor of Benue State University Makurdi.

The Vice Chancellor appointed The Rev. Prof. Andrew Ogah Ijwo as the pioneer Head of Department. Other Departments established alongside that of Development Communication Studies include:

1. Department of Advertising with Dr. Maria Agbenu Onyilo as Acting Head of Department
2. Department of Broadcasting with Prof. Michael Aondoaver Kombol as Head of Department
3. Department of Journalism and Media Studies with Dr. Kevin Alom as Acting Head of Department
4. Department of Public Relations with Dr. Tyotom Keghku as Acting Head of Department
5. Department of Strategic Communications with Dr. Caleb Chile as Acting Head of Department

All these Departments constitute the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies with Prof. Rev. Fr. Vitalis Torwel as Dean.

CHALLENGES

The Department of Development Communication Studies at this commencement point has only the Head as a staff of the Department. Other Lecturers are adjunct staff from other Departments.

There is therefore need to recruit more staff across the ranks such as:
1. Professor - 2
2. Senior Lecturer - 2
3. Lecturer 1 - 2
4. Lecturer 11 - 2
5. Assistant Lecturer - 2

Similarly, there is need for a befitting office accommodation for the Head of Department and other supportive staff. Supportive staff required are:

1. Computer Operator/ Typist
2. Clerical Officer
3. Messenger
4. Cleaner

APPRECIATION

I thank the visionary leadership of Prof. Tor Joe Iorapuu, the 6th Vice Chancellor of our great citadel of learning who has established not less than four new faculties in the University. It is my prayer that the University will compete favourably with other universities in Nigeria and rank among the top 200 in the world.
