Prof. Innocent Isa Ekoja
The Librarian shall be resposible to the Vice Chancellor for the day-to-day administration and control of the University Library. He is also responsible for the cordination of the Library services in the University and its compuses, colleges, centers, schools, departments, institutes and other teaching or research units.
EARLY LIFE
Professor Agada was born on January 21, 1950 in Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State. He is married with four children.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he attained the following qualifications: Diploma in Library Science, 1973, Bachelor of Library Science, 1977, Graduate Certificate in Education, 1977 and Master of Education, 1981. He attained the Ph.D. degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, U.S.A.in 1984.
CAREER / EXPERIENCE
Professor Agada began his professional career as Deputy Serials’ Librarian at Kashim Ibrahim Library, ABU in 1973 and Graduate Assistant in the Department of Library Science, ABU in 1978. He was promoted Senior Lecturer in 1985. In 1990, he received a Post-Doctoral Fellowship award to collaborate on a research project at the School of Communication, Library and Information Studies in Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, USA.
Between 1991 and 2014, he taught at Emporia State University, Kansas (Assistant Professor: 1991 – 1994, Associate Professor: 1999 – 2003, Professor: 2004 - 2009), University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (Associate Professor: 1994 -1998) and Chicago State University, Illinois(Professor: 2009 – 2014).He wasVisiting Professor to The Catholic University of America inWashington, D.C. in 2004.
The new UL is a Professor Emeritus of Emporia State University where he attained the rank of professor in 2004.
Professor Agada’s administrative experience in academia includes directorship of a research center, 1999 – 2004, a doctoral program, 2005 – 2009, an academic department,2009 – 2013 and several grant-funded research projects.
The Council of the Benue State University, Makurdi during its 89th meeting held on 26th September 2014 approved the appointment of Professor John Agada as the third substantive University Librarian. Until his appointment, he was a professor in the Department of Information Studies, Chicago State University, U.S.A. He succeeds Mr. Jonathan Akatu Ocheibi who retired on July 12, 2014. By virtue of his appointment, Professor Agada is a principal officer of the University.
As the University Librarian, he is responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the development, administration and coordination of all library services of the university and it’s campuses, colleges, departments, centers and research units.
PUBLICATIONS
His publications which span library and information science, instructional technology and development studies include 14 monographs and book chapters, and more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in scholarly journals and conference proceedings. He is a reviewer of manuscripts and grant proposals for publication in journals and competitive awards by grant-making agencies, respectively in the areas of program design and assessment, knowledge management and information ethics and policy.
AWARDS
Overall, he has been awarded competitive grants totaling approx. 5 million dollars for designing and managing research and program development projects. One of such grants funded a linkage program between Emporia State University and three Nigerian universities between 2000 and 2004. His most recent award is a 1.9 million dollars’ grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to set up a Center of Academic Excellence in Information and Cyber-Security Education and Research at Chicago State University.
MEMBERSHIP OF PROFESSIONAL BODIES
Professor Agada is a member of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, American Library Association, and Association of Library and Information Studies Education. He is currently seeking membership of equivalent Nigerian professional associations.
