Department of Physics

BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of Physics has packaged their Programme and all the relevant information about the Department into their information Handbook.

The Academic Programme is designed in such a way as to give the students at the basic and applied knowledge of Physics which is broad based at the undergraduate level, thus enabling them to have a wide choice of careers on graduation and preparing them to be adequate for graduate work and other areas of Endeavour. This hand book provides information about the Department for the benefit of the students, staff and others, who may wish to know about the department.

It begins with the general guidelines concerning of the Programme, degrees offered, the Philosophy and objective of the Programme, admission requirement for UME and DE candidates, Terminologies of course system, registration procedure, duration of Programme, course evaluation/examination, instructions to students during examinations, course structure and description amongst others.

This is an invaluable document for the Department. I therefore recommend it to students, staff and the public for their information and guidance.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Physics Department is to produce graduates with the highest level of competence in both theoretical and experimental physics who will be useful to themselves and the society in industry, research and teaching.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the programmes are:

1. To produce qualified physicist who will be capable of translating their theoretical and experimental skills acquired into practical industrial use especially in Geophysical Prospecting. Health/Medical Physics, Electronics and Communication, Energy and Environmental Pollution Studies, Computer Science, Military Science, Aviation etc.
2. To equip the student with the necessary training for scientific research and Postgraduate Studies.
3. To produce Physics graduates capable of filling the much needed gap in the teaching of physics in our schools.
4. To encourage a broad training in other areas of science, in order to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of problem solving.

Admission requirements
The minimum duration of the programme is normally four academic sessions, for UME candidates and three academic sessions for Direct Entry candidate respectively may either be admitted through UME or Direct Entry.

1. UME ENTRY: Candidates must have five (5) relevant credit passes including Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and English at either WASC (O’ Level) School Certificate/General Certificate of Education or SSCE at not more than two sittings. This should be accompanied by an acceptable, UME JAMB scores. Candidates who undergo the University Remedial Science Programme must sit and pass all the relevant subjects at one sitting before they can be considered for admission. They are also required to sit and pass UME JAMB Exams with an acceptable score.
2. DIRECT ENTRY: Candidate with NCE, IJMB and Advances Level Certificates with a good science background and acceptable DIRECT ENTRY Points will also be considered for admission at the 200L.
